What was the average speed of the finch for this 4 minute interval?
Q. A finch rides on the back of a Galapagos tortoise, which walks at the stately pace of 0.065 m/s. After 2.0 minutes the finch tires of the tortoise's slow pace, and takes flight in the same direction for another 2.0 minutes at 14 m/s. What was the average speed of the finch for this 4 minute interval?

A. Vav = D/t = [.065*120 + 14*120]/240 = 7.03 m/s

What type of finch is the easiest to tame?
Q. Hi i might get a baby finch but am wondering which is the easiest to tame and why. thanks i have a parrot i am not getting a parakeet or another parrot. do you think a canary might be easier to tame?
Asked by Dhyanwa - Tue Jul 21 19:28:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best way to tame a bird is to handfeed it as a hatchling- something hard to do with finches since they are so darn small to start with. Society, spice, and zebra finches though are hardy and easy to work with.

How much would it cost to buy a finch and all its supplies?
Q. How much would it cost to buy a finch and all supplies? Not just the finch, but its cage, water dish, food dish, food, light, etc... If you have any tips they would be greatly appreciated if you need any more details just let me know I live in U.S.A
Asked by Sherry - Sat Dec 8 16:51:46 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That depends on what species of finch and which country you live in. Some finches cost over $100, while the zebra finch you can get as low as $1 here where I live (Australia). Also, never buy one finch, make sure you get an even number of the same species (they can be the same gender if you want). So: * Finch: usually $10-$120 each * Cage: a few hundred dollars, or less if you go looking around. Never buy a small cage, they need a lot of horizontal room to fly. A large flight cage or small (or large) aviary is good * Water and food dish: Usually come with the cage. Extra ones can be $3-$10 each * Food: Depends in what quantities you buy, but maybe $15 for pellets and seed, and how ever much for vegetables, fruit, etc * Light: Don't know,… [cont.]

How do I keep 1 female Zebra finch from attacking my other female zebra finch??
Q. We have had them for 7 months without any problems until now. They have Kaytee Forti-diet Egg-Cite (finch Food). They also get Kaytee Hi-Cal Grit for finches. If we cover the cage the aggressive finch stops being aggressive. She is pulling out her sister's feathers.
Asked by hoytik - Sat Nov 10 08:50:19 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sounds like they're becoming mature and just don't want to share and compete for the same resources. You're going to have to separate them before the aggressor ends up killing the other bird.

How can I make my female zebra finch feel happier so that she will lay more eggs?
Q. I just got a male and female zebra finch and the female has laid only 1 egg in the first five days. I have heard that you can make them happier in ways and they will lay more eggs. Anyone know how to make her happier?
Asked by thedude - Wed Nov 5 19:18:27 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I haven't heard of any ways to make your finch "happier" (as this is personification) so that she will "lay more eggs." In order for her to lay eggs she needs to be in breeding condition and the environment needs to be just right. Having your pair in a small finch cage and feeding only seed will not encourage breeding. Your birds need to be on a high protein diet that is changing and includes not only seed but egg food, fresh vegetables, fruits, starches, and supplemental vitamins, mineral, and calcium. Without these items, your hen will not be successful in laying eggs, and your pair will not succeed in raising babies.

How old can a Zebra Finch be and still breed?
Q. I have a Zebra Finch hen who lost her mate (due to a tumor); we added a younger male finch after a while... from their noises (mainly his) I think they're trying to mate. She is at least six years old. She's in great health, but is that too old to breed?
Asked by T J - Tue Dec 11 08:29:53 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No your hen bird is still if in good health will be able to breed ,you will need to give her Cuttle bone and mineral block to replace minerals lost while producing eggs, also a good diet. Such as soaked sprouting seed. Soak some good quality Budgie mix in warm water over-night rinse ,drain and place some-where warm till it sprouts, feed this to the whole time she is laying, brooding and feeding young, also give her a leaf of Spinach now and again,if you an get hold of seeding grasses then these are quite suitable.(if you are in the right climate) Finaly restrict her breeding to no more than two broods a season.

How can you tell if the baby house finch fledge away instead of eaten by predators?
Q. A wild house finch built a nest above a Chritmas wreath in my front door, and 2 baby house finchs were still alive after hatch yesterday, but this early morning around 7 am I found damage nest on the ground and no trace of body or feather were found, do you guys know what could happen to them?
Asked by David H - Fri Jul 25 23:07:17 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the birds just hatched yesterday...then they were eaten. Baby birds cannot leave the nest at so young an age..they would have had to have stayed in the nest for about 2 weeks before they were fully feathered and ready to go. You would not see any trace of a body or feathers..the predator that got them ate them whole.

Is it unhealthy to separate a finch pair?
Q. I have a male and female finch. I was thinking of getting rid of the male and getting 1 or 2 other female finches as companions for the female. Will removing my female's mate cause her great distress (to where she might even die)? The continue to breed and I don't want to constantly monitor them (removing their eggs, etc) With or without the nest, the female lays eggs. Bottom line is that I need them to quit breeding. Do multiple males get along ok? Or is better to have multiple females?
Asked by awoods_mu - Thu Nov 6 12:39:31 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do they already have chicks? becuz wonce they gets chicks theys going to pluck each othhers feathers out. they've done this every single time. It usually leads to death if you don't seperate the male. so yes seperate the male, but you don't need to get rid of him, just put him in a small cage. that's what i dids and look! they're fine now. Get another female to keep little daisy company. -L!@M

How can I stop my male finches from attacking a female finch?
Q. I have two male zebra finches and recently added a third zebra finch. We didn't realize when we bought her that she was female, but now the males are constantly feather plucking her. Is there anyway to discourage this other then separating them (which is what we've currently done)? Also, while she was in the cage w/ the males she kept laying eggs, yet none were fertilized. In her own cage she hasn't laid any. We have finches just as pets and do not want to breed them; I just want what is best for her care. I m hoping some one more experienced then myself will have some ideas of how to get them all to co-habitat (As two large flight cages takes up a lot of room!)?

Asked by number1storm - Tue Jun 24 21:49:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Zebra finches and Society finches mate in pairs, but if there are extras around they will mate and either raise their own or help others raise their babies. They will be OK. That being said, it is my personal expeirence that they will do much if put in a seperate cage for breeding, much better than in a commuinity flight cage.

How do i get my female zebra finch back?
Q. I was cleaning my finches cage(I have 2) and the female bird just escaped, we caught her, but then she wiggled out of my hands. The male bird keeps singing to get her back, but so far nothing. Is there any tricks to get her back? And if not should I give the male finch to the humane society or keep him? Please Help she is dearly missed.
Asked by Khalil O - Tue Aug 26 19:40:17 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Please don'T give him to humane society! This happened a couple of times before with my finches - it depends how attached the two are. Alamo, the male, stayed in the cage but our female got out, so we hung the cage outside during the day, and the female responded to Alamo's call and landed on his cage. If you are unable to catch her by hand, you could use a fish net if it's big enough - it would not hurt her or cause her any trauma. Another thing we did, when Alamo escaped, we left the cage outside with the door open and put the food bowl to where he was accustomed to eating. He got hungry and came back. I hate to say this, but if your bird doesn't show up for a few days, she might not come back. You could go around your backyard or… [cont.]

A. I walked home with Dill and returned in time to ... overhear Atticus saying to Aunty, "...in favor of Southern womanhood as much as anybody, but not for preserving polite fiction at the expense of human life," a pronouncementthat made me suspect they had been fussing again. (15.39) Thought: In calling Southern womanhood a "polite fiction," Atticus asserts that it s not real, it s just an idea that people at least pretend to believe in to make life run smoother. Q. Adaptive radiation is a term used to describe the changes in finch bills on the Galapagos islands. What actually happens in adaptive radiation? (Do finches glow in the dark?) What kind of radiation is this?
Asked by goodg11223 - Sun Mar 16 22:23:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. LOL! No, their bills do not glow in the dark. Adaptive radiation is the term used to describe a rapid and vast amount of diversity among different species that all came from a common ancestor. This is a very common occurrence in islands due to the varying types of mini-environments around them, thus creating many different niches which will lead to many different species. Adaptive radiation is also usually the result of a Founder Effect, or a Bottleneck. If you don't know what those evolutionary terms are either, just e-mail me.
