Does anyone know of any good local fish stores near Massapequa, NY?
Q. I have visited Tropical Showcase in Hicksville which I find to have a great variety in both fish and plants. I have also visited Pets Warehouse in Copiague which I find to have a wide variety of fish. I was curious if anyone else frequents a different aquarium shop in the area (other than the Petcos/Petlands/Petsmarts ) that may have a wide variety of plants/fancy guppies/fish in general.

A. Aquarium Adventures in Carle Place has some great livestock, although their prices are pretty high. They usually have weekly/monthly specials and if you join their fish club you get 25% off all regular priced livestock. If you're up for a drive I would also check out Fishtown USA in Flushing They have a huge selection of stuff and really cheap prices. Hope this helps.

When can I stop bottle feeding my kittens?
Q. I work in a warehouse and found two very small kittens in a trailer - they didn't even have their eyes opened! I have had them for about four weeks now and they are drinking about 16 ounces of formula a day. The vet told me to just start whenever I felt comfortable that they were ready. This was not very good advice in my opinion. Could someone please help with some ideas!! They are already litter trained and do very well with my other pets so I think they may be about ready.

A. Check out this web site it says that at four weeks they should be ready. It is under the section introducing solid food to your kitten. It does give some advice about putting formula on your finger and seeing if they will lick it off. Also you might try getting some canned food and maybe putting a little bit of formula on it so that they recognize the smell of the formula on the food. Just make sure you see the kittens eat and if the food is disappearing and they are still growing then they are fine. Good luck!

Could my dog have E Coli?
Q. Now I've been to the vet (and talked to them) a BUNCH about this, so please don't yell "Go to the vet!". My dog has been having progressively worse diarrhea over the last month or so. He's always had sort of inconsistent stools since I got him last year, but it's never been as bad as it is currently. For the last month it's been about five days on 2-3 days BAD Diarrhea. As in, pure liquid mucous and blood. He's been dewormed with every possible dewormer, he just finished with a Metranidazole and Panacur dose (he still has to take the Panacur in three weeks and then in three months) and after his last Metra dose yesterday morning his stool got really bad again. So bad that today it's been practically just brown colored water coming out. … [cont.]

A. Whether it's E coli or not has nothing to do with it. Treating diarrhea symptomatically is generally the best way to go about it. Coccidia is another parasite to consider.. Technically not a parasite, but it's what it's most often considered as. It's a protozoa. Another thing to consider is starting him on pro-pectalin. Basically a medicine with the "good bacteria" in it to help him with his diarrhea. Works wonderfully. If your vet hasn't treated him for/with the two things I just mentioned, I would suggest switching vets. Edit: sure albon would be worth a try. I'm surprised your vet hasn't done that yet.. If your vet also works on large animals, ask him if he has Marquis. It's a horse anti-protozoal, but unlike albon, it's single dose. … [cont.]
