Mattel Inc. (NYSE: MAT) is the world's largest toy importing company based on revenue. The products it produces include Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, Masters of the Universe, American Girl dolls, board games, and, in the early 1980s, video game consoles. It was founded in 1945 by Harold "Matt" Matson and Elliot Handler (hence the name "matt-el"). Handler's wife, Ruth Handler, later became president, and is credited with establishing the Barbie product line for the company in 1959. Today the Barbie line is responsible for more than 80% of Mattel's profits. Mattel closed its last American factory, originally part of the Fisher-Price division, in 2002. My daughter got some birthday money and I wanted to take her to Walmart to spend it on a toy she likes. It just so happens that she really likes Dora and Diego, which are toys that were included in the recall. Here's the deal with Wal-Mart and recalls. They will remove the items from the shelf and ship them back to the company... AND if for some strange reason the product has been overlooked, the register will not allow the cashier to add the item to your transaction. It will pop up a message that says something about a recall and do not sell (it has been a while, so I can't remember exactly what it says, but I promise you... it won't allow the cashier to scan the item and add it to your bill). One thing that a lot of companies are doing is they are shipping jobs overseas because it is cheaper. They do this so that the CEO and Board of Directors can have their nice expenisive life. I have noticed that things made overseas are not any cheaper. They lose any savings by having to ship it into our ports and then pay to transport it across the nation. Q. My daughter has two of the polly pocket items but that's it. I looked at the list on Mattel's website and I don't think it is as big as the media is making it sound. I'm not suprised by this recall though. We are all to blame as a country. We demand things to be cheap and fast and yet expect them to be safe. Even a small amount of lead-based paint can cause severe, permanent brain damage if ingested by a small child. Get that stuff away from your children ASAP.
