Strike action, often simply called a strike, is a work stoppage caused by the mass refusal of employees to perform work. A strike usually takes place in response to employee grievances. Strikes became important during the industrial revolution, when mass labour became important in factories and mines. In most countries, they were quickly made illegal, as factory owners had far more political power than workers. Most western countries partially legalized striking in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

Strikes are sometimes used to put pressure on governments to change policies. Occasionally, strikes destabilise the rule of a particular political party. A notable example is the Gdańsk Shipyard strike led by Lech Wałęsa. This strike was significant in the struggle for political change in Poland, and was an important mobilised effort that contributed to the fall of governments in Stalinist East Europe.

Flying to Hong Kong Dec 28 on BA ex LHR. What is latest regarding possible strike action and what can we do?
Q. We are getting married on the 05 Jan and need time to prepare. Lots of friends are flying out too so we are rather worried about the whole thing. Wondering whether to rearrange flight with BA to before 27th, or look into travelling from non-BAA airport or European alternative. We can't afford to just hope the strike doesn't happen and end up stuck if it does.

Are you in favour of strike action, regardless of the reasons for striking?
Q. This follows on from the recent London Underground tube strikes I am sure you are all sick of hearing about - try living it though - courtesy of the wonderful Bob Crow and RMT. Now, it has surprised me how many people just blindly seem to think the right to strike is always to be supported, without even asking about the reasons for striking. On the gross assumption that the reports on the negotiations were true (and I endeavoured to seek 'the truth' from as many sources as possible), the strike moved on from being about 5% pay rise (in this climate???) and the reinstatement of two workers sacked for seemingly good reason. When you hear of a strike, and it doesn't affect you, do you just mindlessly throw your fist in the air, in support… [cont.]

A. Strike action regardless of the reasons - no. The right to withdraw your labour (with just cause) - absolutley yes. Bob the Dinosaur and his hard-left crones are doing more to destroy the Trades Union movement single-handedly than Maggie ever did in the 80's. Admire the guys principles, can't stand his politics.

A. Can't help thinking that postal workers are being led like lemmings over a cliff. Seems to me that the union leaders will keep their jobs while the luckless redounded workers will lose everything once companies have taken their custom elsewhere . maybe its a case of lions being led by lambs or dummies. or maybe its just the case that the dumb get dumber..
